Anterior Lumbar Fusions

The anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF) procedure is a technique for fusing the lumbar spine, usually at L5-S1.

The advantages include:

1. A minimally invasive approach

2. The correction of disc height loss

3. Improvement of lumbar lordosis

4. High fusion rate

The X-rays from a recent procedure are shown. After our general surgeon exposes the area, the disc is completely removed and a large cage is placed with fixating screws.

We have had success with the procedure in patients with discogenic back pain, L5 pars defects, large central disc herniations, foraminal stenosis, scoliosis, and adjacent segment stenosis.
